Questioning packaging...

I have been playing with packaging materials and had a lot of fun.
Everyone loves to receive lovely wrapped gifts but at the same time I think of the waste of packaging materials. Up until now, I have always giftwrapped my items but I'm not sure if everyone likes the packaging waste after unwrapping. Even though lots of it can be re-used, not everyone does that.
I wish there was an option at check out to choose for giftwrapping or not as customers not always leave a message in the note to seller at Etsy's check out.
I might just write in the description that my Mini Art Feelings will only come giftwrapped when mentioned in the note to seller. What are your thoughts?

  1. It looks like you've accounted for everything in the mini feelings safe arrival ... I'm certain people would love packaging like this!
In regards to whether or not people should specify about the giftwrapping, well, i'm not certain everyone reads descriptions properly ..

perhaps this isn't helpful .. sorry!

  3. Your wrappings are so beautiful that´s an art by it self to make gorgeous giftparcels.
I also think it should be possible to choose giftwrapping when you checkout.

  4. Your wrapping is very pretty! I think it'll be usefull to have option in checkout about giftwrapping. Especially for big items.

  5. I think the option of giftwrapping is a good think to have.

  6. I think I am one of the few who is not so keen on giftwrapping. I always feel a package in the mail is a gift in its self, with all the wear and tear of traveling fully visible. But an option to get it giftwrapped is a good idea!

  7. I always gift wrap my creations, even if it's not for a gift, I have the feeling people feel so happy with it! You can calculate it in the price of your item. I think your feelings just deserve a beautiful giftwrap, they are too beautiful just to send them in a simple box...
    well, that's only my opinion ... :-)

  8. the little gift box looks absolutely lovely

but i am like Inger ... i dont really get into the gift wrapping when i have bought something myself ...

and i do like the signs of travel on the outer layer

having said that i think mouse had the great idea of recycling card and making recycled boxes for her mice ....

    which i think is fantastic....

i seem to have enormous amounts of waste each day ... i hate the idea that i have so much plastic packaging each day ...super market etc...

i like the idea that the buyer must specify ..that is cool !!!

    very sound idea!!!

  9. Your feelings are absolutely stunning, and the gift wrapping too. I'm so divided in this question. I agree with Match, but at the same time I love getting a beautiful gift wrapped item. I think I would ask people to choose not to have it gift wrapped, if that is what they want.

  10. I think that when a customer get's her/his package it's important to get a good first impression! With such a great package I think the customer will start to love the item in it without seeing it :)

  11. Well I personally gift wrap all my items, but most of the things I have received came with no gift wrap, which is also ok with me. I think it's a lovely idea to give the option to the buyer to chose gift wrap or no.

  12. I know only one thing: I would certainly love it when I received such a beautiful package !

  13. I agree, I think that would be a great addition to the Etsy shops/shopping cart. However, until that day arrives, I think I'd just try the "wrapping available upon request" idea. Maybe even include it in your automated "Message to Buyer" when they purchase, as a reminder in case they didn't fully read the listing. You could even mention your "eco" efforts when speaking of the packing option.

It is really charming though, I'm sure VERY few people would think "ahh...wasteful wrapping". Good luck!!

  14. I love the way your feeling is wrapped in that adorable box with the twine and the little figure. I think you should go for it. I am always so excited when I receive an item that is beautifully wrapped. it makes the item seem even more precious. :)

  15. I'm with f2images.. I think about all the packaging waste as well, but am not really sure what to do about it. It's a great idea to have them specify gift wrapping or not when checking out. I never thought of that as a checkout option, but etsy should definitely add that!!

  16. I think the packaging is uber-cute!!

I agree that having the cute packaging should be a request tho, and not the other way around. :)

  17. I think the packaging you show in the photos is awesome- the green box with the twine - to me, while it does look like a beautiful gift - I also dont see it as extra wrapping per say - but just how the piece comes no matter who buys it. I dont think its overkill or anyone would think you are using too many excess materials. Im sure there are a few people who might not care for it just to arrive in the cardboard box BUT - being someone who takes great care in packaging my items (and being a designer who thinks appearance is important) I know how many hundreds of comments I have received about nice packaging - it is always appreciated.
People will not read your message about how wrapping is available upon request - no matter where you put it or how many times, people skip over everything! I think until there is an option at checkout (hopefully one day!) you should stick with he packaging you show in the photo. thats my two cents!

  18. I hang those two little guys you included with your necklace in my office space hanging from the pink lace you used to wrap the envelope. I was blown away when I opened the envelope. :)

  19. well, you can add gift wrapping as an optional item that one can buy.

BUT: the shipping cost of ceramic items are much higher than - for example - the cost of jewelry (that is why I dont buy ceramics from the US, the shipping price is just horrible!). So if I were the customer, I would choose a little less shipping price instead of a gift wrap.

  20. I struggle with this too. As much as I hate waste, I have to admit that a few of my purchases have been a bit of a let down due to poor packaging. Your packaging shows that you value your work and expect the recipient to as well. I have received pieces that were thrown in a box with a few scraps of newspaper...as if the artist couldn't wait to get rid of it! I love your packaging. Maybe you could stop wrapping the inner box? Just tie with twine and your adorable little figure?

  21. You wrapp your art wonderfully! I think everybody love receiving stuff lovely wrapped. I would also like there was an option during checkout, it could be great!

  22. I am a total sucker for pretty packaging, and yours is so lovely! but the greeny in me knows this is unnecessary, and I like the option where a customer can choose whether they need the extra wrapping or not.

  23. I think this is great packaging. Unique of your own style. :) The buyers can also make their choice of gift wrap or not. :) an option for them makes it more fun.

  24. Your packaging looks great. I'm still looking for better ways to package my jewelry, and it's inspiring to see what other artists do. Personally, I want to make pretty packaging more of a priority. I think it will encourage repeat business.

  25. Gift wrap should totally be optional. If I ordered something that came wrapped, it wouldn't go to waste because I love reusing things, but I think most people might just throw it away, and that is super wasteful. Of course, I think everyone here would reuse it too, so no waste from them! :)

  26. I love the fact that you have beautiful wrap ideas... The gift giving has always been an issue with me. If they are in for a special purchase or do they even want to have the extra fluff. I personally like the extra fluff, good form on the art of wrap!

  27. I try to make my wrapping part of the gift. For instance when I send out my Swarms I draw on the envelope and the paper that The Swarm is protected by is also adorned with images. I do this in hopes that the receiver will not only enjoy what they have received but also so that they will not throw it away. Rather they will keep it sequestered away and bring it out when they need to move The Swarm or maybe they will re-gift it.

  28. i love your packaging, simple and stylish and very you. not much waste.
i thinks it's good to give an option as you can't please all people with opposite views!

i always wrap mine but am thinking maybe i should offer the option!

  29. I like the option idea myself.

For those who don't read shop policies? I think that they wouldn't know the difference.

Of course if you showed a picture of your packaging as part of the listing you could also add text stating that your orders are gift wrapped on request:

    Ask for gift wrap!
    Gift Wrapped upon request

    or something similarly worded.

  30. I think your wrapping is not over the top and you should keep it as it also helps for the safe transport of your 'feelings'.

Also, I know when I buy one from you - I would want to have a special box to designate for it when I redecorate for the holidays, that way it's not just thrown into a bin for a couple of months. Keep the wrapping...

  31. Thank you all for your opinion! It's warmly apreciated!
I decided to giftwrap and write in the description that people will need to let me know if they don't want that.
After all, it's only a tiny cardboard box & some twine.
I will need to use bubblewrap to sent it anyway! :)

  32. You are right, Mitsy, about the amount of waste after unwrapping bought things, on and off line. I am always surprised how much goes to the bin after I come from shopping (all that veggie trays, cello wraps...) I like your idea of having an opption at the checkout. I think, more and more people are concerned about this issue.
