I don't know how many metres of spool knitting I did as a kid but I bet it was long, long, long. I loved doing it even though I never really knew what to do with the result. The repetitive action of the spool knitting kept me quiet for many, many hours.I found my old spool back at my parents home in this vintage sewing box. Both are mine now as my mom was very happy to get rid of both. I'm addicted again. :)I'll finish off this spoolknitted flower today and will send it to one of the people who comment on this post. Will pick a lucky one in my next creative space.
Want to show your space? Hop over to Kootoyoo's to play! It's fun! :)
Oh so great,
ReplyDeleteI just to have such a crochet doll as a kid,
maybe I should get one again:)
Ah I have one too, somewhere, very addictive indeed!!
ReplyDeleteWe got one of those this week too! I think I have set both my daughters on the path to addiction!
ReplyDeleteYep, I also have these memories. Should we start an addict club? =)))
ReplyDeleteI have no idea what "spool knitting"is... where is wikipedia! LOL
ReplyDeleteLovely little flowers! I love this! We should get together and crochet... not only talktalktalk but crochet at the same time! ahahaha
What a cute little tool, I have never seen one. I do have a vintage sewing box very much like yours. I love it!
ReplyDeletekan dat met punnikken? wow!
ReplyDeleteMitsy--You can also make really cute dollhouse rugs with these...just wind them into a coil and stitch!
ReplyDeleteWhat a sweet flower!
ReplyDeleteHope to be the winner! ;)
Oh this is so cool!
ReplyDeleteoh, I remember having one of those too... a very very long time ago ;) the flower turned out great I think !
ReplyDeleteoooh, I remember I never succeed in working with this little tool!
ReplyDeleteI have a very cute one, a footstool!
hey, I know what you can do with lots and lots of meters of that stuff.... Knit a carpet! I made one years ago which was 1.20m by 80cm, it was really nice and warm!
ReplyDeleteHugs,
micky
You made that flower from spool knitting? WOW! I've seen those little doodads in the shops but always wondered what I'd do with the results. I didn't know you could make actual things with the result. I am completely clueless when it comes to wool-related crafts.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if maybe you might be so kind as to show us how you made that cute flower? I have heaps of wool (yarn) I don't know what to do with. I just bought it cos it looks pretty. ;) I'd definitely love to put it to good use and make something this cute out of it!
FAB i adore those things ...so brilliant and so very simple...
ReplyDelete"rats tails" we used to call them and you really never could find anything to do with the result ..sometimes barbie or skipper got a fat scarf ....
you seem to have worked something lovely out though!!!
wowww, mitsy, i am in love with the doll!
ReplyDeleteMy grandmother had exactly that sort of sewing box! I wonder where it is now... Maybe I could find it. :)
ReplyDeleteIn a strange coincidence, just this morning I was thinking that I should try spool knitting some time!
Never knew the english word was "spoolknitting"! The tails of my cattoys are made on the very spoolknit I used as a kid (shaped like a red mushroom with white dots).
ReplyDeleteI never thought of making flowers, but my mum got a lot of potholders for mothersday in those days.
I love it too Mitsy, and I did it a lot as a child. Have you seen my spoolknitting machine ? http://kraplap.blogspot.com/2010/05/challenge-winding.html That goes really fast !! bought the thing on a French market lots of years ago, and I recently discovered it again !
ReplyDeleteoh this brings so many childhood memories =))
ReplyDeletePunniken ! Love it ! Ik doe het met visdraad en kraaltjes tussen. Eéééél plezant werkske !
ReplyDeleteI had one of those too. Then I upgraded to the Barbie mechanical one...and made kilometers of wollen tubes...
ReplyDeleteI remember doing that as a kid and ending up with what seemed like miles of the stuff. but never really did anything with it besides put it on the xmas tree in the winter
ReplyDeleteI have never had one of those.. but now I want one!
ReplyDeleteReally liked the idea of making a carpet.. !
Te he, loved this - I never knew what to do with it either. I think now I'd try different yarns like linen and string and make basket handles, or perhaps a really skinny tie belt. You are getting my creative juices flowing - that flower is lovely. Just need to persuade my daughter that this is a fun activity - hmmmm.....
ReplyDeleteMy eyes enjoyed the pretty blue this morning. Thank you very much.
ReplyDeletehey, my mom has the same sewing box :)
ReplyDeletethat is what you get when you mom doesn't get rid of everything like mine does! man, that's a cool box.
ReplyDeleteI love the colour of that flower. How old were you when you started spool knitting? Also would a 4 year old be able to do it? I'd love to introduce the Peanut to something like this.
ReplyDeleteWow, that brings back many child hood memories! I grew up in Germany and there it is called 'Strickliesel".
ReplyDeleteBut when I was a child I did not have such a nice one, we just drove four nails into a wooden spool...
Two years ago I found almost the same as in your photo in a shop here in Israel and I bought two for my granddaughters. And your mother's sewing box is almost the same I inherited from home.
Thank you for sharing!
Yael.
hahaha I have a little spool-knitting doll too, but I could never make it work for me! :(
ReplyDeletePerhaps I will get her out and try again. . . :)
Ow, brings back memories, I had one that looked like toadstool. Something green, if I remember correctly.
ReplyDeleteHow addictive this was... My niece now has one too, my dad made it for her :)
I love your spool! And what a great use for the knitted result!
ReplyDeletei have them too. i have a 6 pin version
ReplyDeleteyou make my fingers tickle too make something now.
nynke
Oh man. Your spool is the cutest!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, blast to the past! I remember learning spool knitting when I was kid and totally forgot what to call it since then... wow...so very cool :)
ReplyDeleteRemind me of teaching you the i-cord. So much easier...
ReplyDeleteSorry, was distracted!
ReplyDelete.. but I love the spool too :) Reminds me of childhood.
LOve the flower you made! Clever!
I love the flower! I will have to get out my seemingly hundreds of feet of cord and try that!
ReplyDeleteThanks!
My friend used to do this in school for hours. I'm not sure what she did with all of those strands.
ReplyDeleteOh that takes me back to my childhood :) I had one of them to and would make those yarn snakes for hours on end. I bet my mom still has mine to. I must ask her *grin*.
ReplyDeleteso cool!! I have one of those dolls somewhere as well...will dig for it now)
ReplyDeleteMy mother had such sewing box.
ReplyDeleteNow my sister have it, as she inherited all the sewing-talent :)
I had one of those things as a child. And I bought recently a new one because I was so happy to see that you can find them this days also. But I didn't know what to do with the result, and that flower gave me an idea. Thank you once again. :D
ReplyDeleteI used to love that when I was a child, even though my spool was nowhere near as cute as yours! :)
ReplyDeletePretty vintage thingy this little spool-knitting doll :) I never even knew that such a tool even exists :)
ReplyDeleteAnd your brooch in very lovely too.
