Tulips

Spring arrived in my studio. And my co-worker told me that when you pinch a needle right below the flowerhead, the tulips won't open up so fast.
Worth a try but I don't know if it works, anybody heard about this before?
I did half of them with the needle and half of them are left unpinched so I'll probably know in a few days...

Hi!
I've never heard about this but...I'm curious to know how the experiment goes...!!!
Never heard about that. But now curious what will happen to your tulips.
Have a nice day, Fredda
I can't wait to hear the answer to that one! It's so hot here that tulips tend to lose their petals almost before you finish walking out of the shop!... joking, of course, but you know what I mean :) Happy first Spring Mitsy! Kx
This is weird! I never heard it before, but exactly this morning a colleague said the same to me :D I'm gonna try it too
looove flowers! Didnt know that trick!
On a slightly related theme - I was told that if you put a pin hole through the BOTTOM of tulips the stems won't bend so much and they'll stay straight in your vase. Hmm... not sure if this makes you theory (and mine) more or less likely.
I know this trick, but it is preventing the flower to bend over as far as I know.
I have heard of it, it will not help them not to open, but they will not grow so long.....
as by Pinchi9ng you break a cell inside which cannot strech and grow, so the tulip will not grown much higher as when you don´t do this... You can also use a sharp knife for this. j
love love love tulips, my favourite flower by far!
The only trick I know is to put them in 1 - 2 cm of water, not more, otherwise they grow at least 5 cm in the next few days...

enjoy your tulips, Mitsy!
Ouch! Fun experiment. I've never heard of that.
never heard of that trick !
Those are so pretty.
Hello, here a tip from a dutch "girl", and who know best about tulips? we Dutch people (at least we think we know best!). Sticking in a needle prevents the flower from growing any further, and don't put them in a lot of water (but never let them be dry). I never use the needle, I squeeze the stems just under the flower. You'll feel it "break" (don't know the Englisch term for it) and this will also prevent the flower from growing.

Ohhhh!!! I though they were plastic when I saw them on Flickr!
Beautiful tulips.... gorgeous!

I know this is silly, but it creeps me out that you put a pin in the flower. Don't know why! lol
An easier method for both making you tulips strand up straight and open slower is to put a couple of pennies in the vase. I like it better because you don't have to stab your flowers and no crazy pins sticking out everywhere.

Yes, I've heard this many times - also works in Roses and stops their heads from drooping. You can do it more than once. I read somewhere it was about letting air escape but that doesn't make any sense to me. I also heard - but haven't tried - that if you put a couple of pennies in the bottom of the vase, they don't droop either. Looking forward to reading your research paper on the topic :=D
